MUSCAT -- The 5th Middle East Artificial Lift Forum (MEALF) began in Bahrain yesterday under the auspices of Dr Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza, Bahrain's Minister of Oil and Gas Affairs and Chairman of the National Oil and Gas Authority. Managed by Omanexpo LLC, the biennial conference is being attended by over 150 industry professionals from within the GCC and other parts of the world. The two-day event will feature a total of 23 technical presentations related to the use of various artificial lift technologies in oil production.

A series of pre-forum training workshops were held a day earlier on these technologies, which include electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), gas lifting (GL), and beam pumping (BP) or sucker rod pumping (SRP). In his keynote address, Dr Ali Mirza stressed the important role played by artificial lift in crude oil production by pointing out that over 50 per cent of the world's oil wells currently utilise some form of artificial lift technology. Citing the local situation, he added that more than 60 per cent of oil wells in Bahrain also use these technologies, contributing about 50 per cent of the kingdom's total oil production.

Dr Ali Mirza also said that advancements in automation and information technology, new intelligent production tools and monitoring systems have resulted not only in significant operational cost reduction but also in improvements in productivity, efficiency, reliability and control. These and many other new developments in artificial lift are among the topics to be discussed at MEALF 2009. The conference speakers consist of artificial lift experts from Baker Hughes Centrilift, Borets Company, DynaPump, JPTS Oilfield Services, Kudu Industries, Kuwait Oil Company, Lufkin, Novomet, Petroleum Development Oman, PCM Oil & Gas, Saudi Aramco, Schlumberger, Tierra Alta, Weatherford International and Zenith Oilfield Technology. In addition to the presentation of technical papers, MEALF 2009 also features an exhibition that showcases the latest artificial lift products, equipment, systems and services.
