GENEVA - Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki arrived, Sunday afternoon in Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the 25th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council whose works will start, on Monday, and will run until March 28.
Marzouki is expected to deliver Tunisia's speech during the UN inaugural session which will involve a high-level interactive debate on significant issues related to the protection and consolidation of human rights.
The session will be attended by leaders and heads of delegations from 192 UN member countries.
These issues include death penalty, genocide, sexual violence, freedom of religion and freedom of belief, rights of persons with disabilities, children's rights, cultural rights and rights to a clean and healthy environment.
The 25th session will be opened by a speech of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, followed by statements made by President of the Council Baudelaire Ndong Ella, President of the General-Assembly John W. Ashe, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay and President of Switzerland, host country, Didier Bukhalter, according to a press release issued by organisers.
President Marzouki will hold talks with UN senior officials, including High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and representatives of African countries.
The President of the Republic will also meet Tunisian expatriates in Geneva and is expected to give an interview to the Swiss national Radio.
An office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was established on April 2011 in Tunis and officially inaugurated on July 2011 by Pillay.
