Madinat Zayed, Aug 18th, 2009 (WAM): As the consultative sessions continued in the Western Region to design its future shape, the Madinat Zayed was named the Industrial city, while Liwa was projected as the administrative headquarters of governmental services.

The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), the agency responsible for the future physical planning of Abu Dhabi, is holding the public consultation sessions for Al Gharbia.

The proposals made by the Assistant Director of planning at the UPC and the Head of the Team tasked with the Plan Al Gharbia 2030 Aamir Hussain Al Hamadi were warmly welcomed by the inhabitants of the western regionAl Gharbia is spanned across a 60,000 square kilometre area and accounts for 83pc of Abu Dhabi Emirate's landmass.

In partnership with the Western Region Development Council (WRDC) and Western Region Municipality (WRM), the sessions are being organised for individual settlements of the Al Gharbia region with local Government authorities along with its residents and will be the next step towards formulating the urban framework, Plan Al Gharbia 2030.

Director General of the WRM Hamoud Humaid Al Mazroui said that the consultation sessions are held with the people of the region as per directives from President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The implementation of these consultations is closely followed up by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's representative in the Western Region.

Liwa has been seen as an agricultural region of historical importance in the past.
