Lebanon’s Jiyyeh Power Plant To Get New Storage Tanks
The state-owned Electricité du Liban (EDL) has signed a contract with an unnamed Egyptian company to install new storage tanks at the Jiyyeh power plant, which was shelled by Israeli jets during the July-August war on Lebanon. The storage tanks at the plant were destroyed and up to 15,000 tons of heavy fuel oil were spilled into the Mediterranean Sea, causing major pollution to the coastline (MEES, 7 August). Two of Jiyyeh’s power generation units are now operational and the other two will start up as soon as the new tanks are in place. The clean up of the oil spill is underway.
