DAMASCUS, March 25 (KUNA) -- Eminent Arab and Syrian media figures have praised participation of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in the Arab Summit scheduled here at the end of the month, and affirmed that his participation would boost significance of the top-level meeting.

Zuhair Ibrahim, a journalist who was interviewed by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) at the media center of the summit, affirmed that Sheikh Sabah's participation in the summit had been anticipated, considering the Gulf sState's standing keenness on taking part actively in Arab summits.

Sheikh Sabah is well known for his political shrewdness and experience that are necessary for "cooling off the hot Arab atmospheres and resolving problems at the Arab level," said Ibrahim, alluding to Kuwait's role in tackling strains in relations among some Arab states.

His presence at the summit reflects the depth of the historic relations binding Kuwait and Syria and constitutes appreciation for Damascus' support for the Gulf state under various difficult circumstances, the prominent journalist added.

Syria contributed with troops in the war that liberated Kuwait and ended a seven-month occupation of the Gulf country by troops of the former Iraqi regime -- launched on August 2, 1990.

Suad Jarous of the Middle East newspaper told KUNA that the participation of His Highness the Amir at the summit "under the current complex circumstances in the region reflects a sense of responsibility and wisdom toward the Arab world and the peoples, who expect clear stances by the leaders toward the major issues."

The Kuwaiti leaders, particularly Sheikh Sabah, a former veteran foreign minister, are well known for their relentless efforts for sake of narrowing the gulf among the Arabs, she added.

She expressed her belief that Sheikh Sabah would help in thrashing out some inte-Arab disagreements at the summit.

Identical thoughts and sentiments were echoed by Muwaffaq Mohammad, the correspondent of Australia Radio in Damascus, noting that Sheikh Sabah's presence at the summit would be crucial for solidifying the Arabs' ranks, bolstering joint action and facing various challenges against the nation.

The correspondent of ANB television station, Safaa Mohammad, interpreted the announcement about Sheikh Sabah's intention to attend the meeting as reflecting the will to revive Arab solidarity and renouncing narrow interests.
