Kuwaiti heads team to mediate between Bahrain govt, opp

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 23: The region is currently facing difficulty that necessitates the improvement of issues concerning freedom and preservation of human dignity. People should be allowed to live in freedom and not punished for expressing opinions, reports Al-Watan Arab daily quoting MP Dr Yousef Al-Zalzalah as saying.

Al-Zalzalah added that people participating in decision making has become necessary for any regime that wishes to preserve democracy. He noted the level of disturbances and opposition rigidity will reduce once democracy is allowed to prevail. He said Kuwait has always enjoyed democracy right from inception by the method known as elections in modern times, citing the appointment of Sabah Family to rule.

He urged lessons must be learnt from events of the past, as well as happenings in other nations. He reiterated that Kuwait is blessed with rulers who love democracy and are friendly to people.

Meanwhile, Kuwaiti businessman Ali Al-Matrouq said he headed a delegation to Bahrain recently to mediate between the Bahraini government and the opposition, reports Al-Qabas daily.

According to Al-Matrouq, the delegation, in its meeting with Bahraini Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa and some members of the opposition, expressed Kuwait's willingness to provide assistance, if the need arises, to bridge the gap between the two parties.  He said the Crown Prince affirmed his readiness to end the crisis and release tens of arrested protesters as an act of goodwill.  He added the opposition members highly appreciated the initiative of Kuwait.
