Amman - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Sunday discussed with Mexican foreign minister José Antonio Meade Kuribrena prospects for cementing Jordanian-Mexican ties and the situation in the Middle East.

The King said Jordan is interested to forge stronger ties with Mexico and to build on the king's recent visit to the Latin American nation and his talks with president Enrique Pena Nieto, noting that Jordan is preparing to open an embassy in Mexico later this year and that the two countries had signed a free trade agreement.

His Majesty called for the validation of signed bilateral agreements and memos of understanding, particularly those in the fields of information technology, transport, healthcare, tourism and industry, adding that Jordan provides a gateway for Mexico to the Middle East due to its strategic location.

He said the Kingdom had a unique investment climate and qualified manpower and had signed free trade agreements with various world countries.

Commenting on political developments in the Middle East, King Abdullah said Jordan bears a huge burden for hosting 1.3 million Syrians, which posed enormous pressures on the country's infrastructure, services and limited resources, particularly in the north. He thanked Mexico for aid it had provided to the Kingdom in that context through United Nations agencies.

His Majesty also spoke about the situation in Iraq and its dangerous repercussions on regional security and stability, reiterating Jordan's support for Iraq's unity and the safety of its territory. He said a solution to the crisis in Iraq should come through a political process inclusive of all Iraqis.

The King said the Palestinian cause is the central issue and stressed that efforts should be pursued to find a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions to set up an independent and viable Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Kuribrena hailed the King's wisdom in addressing various regional issues and his support for peace endeavours, noting his country's interest in enhancing its friendship and cooperation with Jordan in various fields.
