Erbil - A leader from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said 10 members of the KDP politburo in the former round were reinstated, adding the rest of the members will be elected Wednesday.
The election of the 15-member politburo was due Tuesday in the second assembly of the recently elected leadership board. The major Kurdish party in the Kurdistan Region, northern Iraq, concluded its 13th congress last month, where the new board was elected.
Avin Hiruri told AKnews Tuesday the leaders voted by majority to the KDP president, Massoud Barzani's proposal to reinstate 10 politburo members who could secure their posts in the leadership for this round.
Some 51 leaders as well as the president of party, Massoud Barzani, and his vice, Nechirvan Barzani (Massoud Barzani's nephew) constitute the leadership board.
The reinstated members include Masrur Barzani (Massoud Barzani's son and the head of the Kurdistan Region's Security Agency), Fadhil Mirani (the former Gen. Sec. of the party), Karim Shingali (Kurdistan's Interior Minister), Hoshyar Zebari (the Iraqi Foreign Minister), Rozh Nuri Shawes (the former deputy Iraqi prime minister), Mahmoud Mohammed, Izzaddin Barwari, Azad Barwari, Kamal Kirkuki (the speaker for the Kurdish Regional parliament) and Omar Othman.
Hiruri added the female leaders in the party also eye politburo membership. This comes while from the 51 leaders, only five females could have access to the leadership positions-three of them through the quota system after failing to gather enough votes.
The KDP was founded in 1946 by Mustafa Barzani, Massoud Barzani's father. Massoud Barzani, who is also the Kurdistan Region's president, is heading the KDP since his father's death in 1979.
