Baghdad, May 1 (AKnews) - Hundreds of supporters of the Communist Party demonstrated in Firdous Square at the center of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, today, to mark international labor day. They demanded the repeal of Law 150 of 1987, and denounced the capitalist system, which they described as fundamentally unjust.

Resolution 150 was put in place by the Revolutionary Command Council, which was set up in 1968 by the military as the ultimate decision making body, but still remains on the statute books. The law disbanded the General Federation of Workers Unions in Iraq and curtailed workers rights.

Zaid Jassim al-Baghdadi, one of the organizers of the demonstration, told AKnews: "The resolution is a real disaster for the General Federation of Workers Unions in Iraq and nothing like it was issued anywhere in the world in the last two-thirds of the twentieth century. This is an authoritarian, arbitrary decision that seeks to obscure the working and struggling classes.

"The government and parliament must work to abolish this law and all laws that impede the work of unions."

Most of the protesters wore red hats, to show their support for the Communist Party.
