Iran will export some $1 billion worth of hand-woven carpets in the current year (started March 20), said the head of National Carpet center.

Speaking in the inaugural ceremony of the 21st International Carpet Exhibition held in Tehran International Permanent Fairgrounds on Sunday, Mohammad Baqer Alikhani said hand-woven carpet fraction has been formed in the Parliament, adding 100 lawmakers have joined the fraction.

He said 10 commercial delegations have been dispatched to foreign countries in the current year to assess the market for Iranian rugs, adding the figure shows a threefold increase compared to the figure for the past year, Mehr News Agency reported.

He added that 15 hand-woven carpet exhibitions have been scheduled to be held in the foreign countries in the current year.

Alikhani also said two commercial delegations from Denmark and China are present in the exhibition, pointing out that 65 countries have been invited to participate in the expo.

"So far, 45 foreign guests have arrived to take part in the exhibition," he said.

The 21st International Carpet Exhibition will last till Sept. 29.

In August, deputy director of Iran National Carpet Center said carpet exports reached $116 million in the first quarter of the current year.

Mojtaba Feizollahi said Iran exports its carpets to more than 50 countries including Germany, Italy and Japan.

He added that Iran exported more than $560 million worth of hand-woven carpets last year.
