Swedish home furnishing company Ikea has started a recall of some dishware sold to UAE consumers due to possible burn and breakage risks.
Ikea’s Heroisk and Talrika plates, bowls and mugs “can break and potentially cause burns due to hot content,” the company said on its website.
It is not clear how many items in the two product lines have been sold to UAE households, but a similar announcement by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission said that nearly 160,000 units had to be recalled in the American and Canadian markets alone.
The consumer body said the dishware can become brittle and break, causing hot food or liquid to leak out, posing a burn hazard.
No receipt necessary
In the UAE, customers can return the items to any Ikea store and obtain a full refund. Proof of purchase or receipt is not required.
Ikea UAE confirmed that they have received reports of the products breaking.
“Safety is a top priority for Ikea and therefore we are taking precautionary measures and recalling Heroisk and Talrika [products] as they can break and potentially cause burns due to hot content,” Ikea said.
“All our products are tested and comply with applicable standards and legislation. Despite this we have received reports of the products breaking.”
Ikea has at least five outlets across the following UAE locations: Dubai Festival City, Jebel Ali, Yas Island and Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
