Iran has exported $311 million worth of hand-woven carpets in the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21-October 22) showing 32 percent growth against the corresponding period last year, head of Iran's National Carpet Center announced.

Speaking on the sidelines of a hand-woven carpet exhibition in Qom, Feysal Mardasi said that 90 percent of the Iranian hand-woven carpets are exported to 23 countries adding that the US, Germany, and UAE are the main importers of the products, IRIB reported.

Mardasi described Qom hand-woven carpet as one of the exquisite carpets in the country and said carpet weavers should pay due attention to the tastes of potential consumers.

Last month the official put the total value of the world's carpet exports in the first six month to September 22 at $1.3 billion adding Iran's share accounts for one third of the amount.

Most of the problems facing this traditional art are due to low quality of the raw materials, ignoring consumer interest and marketing as well as the consistent loss of original design patterns, the official noted and added that training programs for producers are underway to tackle the problem.

The country produces about five million square meters of carpets annually, of which 80 percent are sold in international markets.

Carpet weaving is an ancient tradition in Iran. The Persian carpet with its fast colors, fine designs and unique texture has always been the most tangible manifestation of Persian art for other nations.

The seventh specialized exhibition of hand-woven carpet in Qom province runs in Qom permanent fair grounds until November 20.
