A plan to renovate 24 dilapidated houses in Muharraq is underway.

The Works Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry held a handover event for one of the renovated homes, in the presence of Under-Secretary for Municipal Affairs Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

He said the construction of 24 houses was part of the project that covers dilapidated houses in partnership with municipal councils.

“(The project) contributes to providing a better living environment for citizens through the demolition and rebuilding of homes for families with low income,” said Shaikh Mohammed.

“In co-operation with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca), homes in Muharraq which fall within a cultural interest’s scope, are being rehabilitated for the heritage architectural features.”

Shaikh Mohammed explained the building area of the reconstructed house is 161.5sqm and preserves the old traditional features preserved in co-operation with Baca at a cost of about BD45,000.

The GDN reported last year that the Muharraq Municipal Council was co-ordinating with Baca to restore traditional neighbourhoods to their former glory.
