Etihad Airways is restarting more destinations on its network this month. The airline said it will “significantly increase” the number of scheduled flights around the world, as travel restrictions in various destinations continue to ease.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will re-deploy passenger aircraft on the Athens, Greece route starting next week, it said in a statement.

The twice-weekly schedule, to be operated using a two-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting June 24.

The UAE carrier grounded its passenger fleet in March following a government decision to stop the entry of incoming visitors in the country to curb the spread of coronavirus. It recently started resuming some passenger services to select destinations after the flight suspension was lifted.

Airlines in the Middle East region are expected to lose $4.8 billion in 2020 as passenger revenues are forecast to decline by $24 billion compared to the previous year.

Airports in the region are also expected to take a hit, with an estimated total revenue loss of $7 billion, representing a 52 percent year-on-year decline in 2020.

Etihad assured that it has implemented safety protocols to limit the spread of coronavirus, as it attempts to revive air travel.

“The airline has implemented an extensive sanitization and customer safety program and is practicing the highest standards of hygiene and cabin deep-cleaning, check-in, health screening, boarding, inflight, crew interaction, meal service, arrival and ground transportation,” it said in a statement.
