The current position is attributed to a currency that enables local farmers to sell the produce at competitive prices, according to Head of the Agricultural Export Council’s Citrus Committee Mohamed Abdel Hady.
Egypt exported approximately 1.8 million tons of oranges in 2019, with revenues standing at about $660 million (EGP 10.35 billion), according to the news portal.
“Disruptions earlier this year due to coronavirus may mean the quantities exported will be less than 2019,” the economic news platform said.
The North African country has remained, as reported last May, the world’s largest exporter of oranges, after exporting 1.3 million ton of the citrus fruit, despite the slowdown in trade movement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the period from January 1st until October 21st, Egypt exported more than 4.46 million tons of agricultural products, according to a Cabinet statement.
Citrus plants topped the exports with 1.39 million tons, followed by potatoes with 678,640 tons.
Last April, Head of the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine Ahmed el Attar said the country became the top exporter of oranges across the world.
