E-vision had a very successful run of its special Eid promotion package and the company expects a large number of commercial converts, said the head of E-vision, a subsidiary of etisalat that provides digital cable television to viewers all over the UAE.
"As a means to reward our customers, we offered all our packages free of cost,'' Humaid Rashid Sahoo, CEO, E-vision, told Emirates Business.
"Rewarding our customers was the prime motive of this promotion, but we had other objectives also that we achieved with the same exercise," said Sahoo explaining the marketing potential of the promotion.
"We wanted to introduce all E-vision channels to our customers who may not have been aware of the new channels that were included in our bouquet recently. This objective was achieved in co-operation with our partners. Following a long selection process and taking care of other details, we decided to open the entire selection to our viewers," said Sahoo.
This was the second such promotion by E-vision. It had carried out a similar promotion during last Eid and saw a large number of its customers upgrading their bouquets, according to E-vision officials. This year the special promotion started on the first day of Eid (September 20) and it will continue until today.
"Certainly we expect an encouraging number of customers to upgrade their packages. This happened after our Eid promotion last year and the same is expected this time, as well," Sahoo said.
The free viewing of more than 300 channels includes all channels on Showtime, Orbit, Pehla, Firstnet, ART and TFC packages.
On the subject of television growing its domain on the internet, Sahoo said: "It's a development that we have to keep our eyes on and we can't ignore the fast growth in that direction. However, it's still at a very primitive stage and is not a matter of concern... as in a competition to the television."
Sahoo was responding to questions over a recent report that says more than a million people will be watching television on internet by 2011 in the Middle East. This is attributed to the large youth population in the region.
With the Middle East having more than 47 million internet users, the majority of whom are below 35 years of age, NETGEAR, a provider of networking and storage products, has identified the prospects in tapping into the younger segment of the consumer market as they prove to be more susceptible to global consumer trends.
"The internet has pushed the limitations of conventional media channels not only because of its real-time features, but mainly due to the convenience it offers to users," said Ahmad Zeidan from NETGEAR Middle East.
