MUSCAT: Dura-Line Middle East (DLME), a joint venture between Dura-Line India and Oman-based Al Jasser Group, has commenced production of cable ducts and pressure pipes, which are for water, wastewater, and natural gas pipelines and other industrial applications.

Dura-Line Middle East, which has set up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sohar with an installed capacity of 6,000 tonnes per annum, combines the technological strength of Dura-Line and A-D Technologies with the local market service support of Al Jasser, company's vice-chairman V. T. Saileswaran told Times of Oman.

The company has invested RO3 million for setting up the plant. "The entire plant covering a built up area of 7,000 square metres was completed within 90 days," he said, adding: "The plant and machinery and the quality systems are exactly identical to the Dura-Line India facilities and they are the natural extension of the Dura-Line India to a location beyond the geographical borders of the country." DLME will officially inaugurate the plant on January 9 in Sohar and the company will conduct another function to launch the product in Muscat the next day.

Strategic location

Dura-Line Middle East currently has two extrusion machines capable of producing in the size of 20mm to 250mm and the sizes beyond 250mm can be easily complemented from the Indian units to provide the full size range to the end users in the Middle East region.

"Our major customers are organisations that are engaged in building water, wastewater, natural gas pipelines and irrigation systems. The Haya Water and Public Authority for Electricity and Water are our major customers," Saileswaran added.

On the advantages of setting up the project in Sohar, Saileswaran said that it is a strategic location for exporting the products to the Middle East and North Africa region. "We are aiming at exporting 60 per cent of the company's products."

Dura-Line India, a leading manufacturer of polyethylene pipes and ducts in India, has three plants. The company makes pipes and ducts in the range of 3mm to 1,000mm as per national and international standards for ducting and pressure pipes for water, gas and other industrial applications. The Indian firm has a combined capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum. More than one third of production is exported to Europe, Australia, Middle East and other Asian countries.
