Emirates has announced the resumption of five more passenger services to Europe, expanding its global network to nearly 100 destinations.

The Dubai-based carrier said on Monday it will resume services to Budapest from October 1, Bologna, Dusseldorf and Hamburg from November 1, and Lyon from November 4.

With the addition of new services, Emirates will resume operations in 99 destinations by the first week of November, approximately nine months since the global lockdown.

The airline has been gradually resuming flights since the lifting of travel restrictions, as carriers around the world attempt to restore air connectivity amid the drop off in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.

New services

Emirates’ flights to and from Budapest and Lyon will operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while flights to and from Bologna, Dusseldorf and Hamburg will operate twice a week on Fridays and Sundays.

All flights to the five cities will be operated by the Boeing 777-300ER, providing significant cargo capacity on each flight, according to Emirates.

Airlines have been burning through cash as passengers refrain from making travel plans to avoid contracting the virus.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned on Thursday that the Middle East’s aviation industry is still struggling despite the resumption of air travel.

It estimated that before the end of the year, some 1.7 million people in the aviation and related industries could lose their jobs due to the pandemic.
