Dubai-based developer Damac Properties plans to build a synthetic outdoor ice skating rink in the emirate, a spokesperson said this week.

"It will be based at The Drive at the Akoya development.... It is a synthetic, composite material, not plastic," a Damac spokesperson told Zawya when asked about the project, which will be outdoors and similar to a traditional frozen ice skating rink.

Damac is in discussions with a Canadian contractor, where synthetic skating rinks are more common, according to a report by Construction Week Online, but the spokesperson declined to reveal any further details.

"We cannot comment on this as we have not selected the supplier as of now," she said.

The Drive at Akoya was launched in 2014 and is due to be completed in 2018, according to a report by Zawya Projects in 2014. It is part of the $6 billion Akoya by Damac master plan development, which was launched in 2013 and is located near Dubai Motor City.

Akoya Drive will have retail outlets, an outdoor cinema, a children's play area and a golf putting green. It will compete with other retail strips, such as The Walk at JBR and CityWalk.
