Dubai: A drunken man who had headed to the police to report his missing passport has been fined Dh1,000 for drinking by a Dubai court .

The Dubai Public Prosecution charged the 50-year-old Indian instrumentation engineer, identified as T.T., with consuming liquor.

The Dubai Court of Appeal fined him Dh1,000 after cancelling the two-month jail sentence initially given to him by the Dubai Court of First Instance.

His lawyer, Karunagappaly Shamsudeen, of Al Kabban Advocates and Legal Consultants, told the appeal's court his client "did not drink liquor in the UAE but did that on a return flight that he took from India to Dubai".

Traces of liquor
The court heard the accused discovered he had lost his passport after he reached his home and went to the police station to report the matter.

Police suspected that he was drunk.

Traces of liquor were found in his body.
