KUWAIT -- Government officials and specialists have affirmed Saturday that drinking water was clean and that pollution caused by malfunction in Mishref Sewage treatment station was not affecting distillation stations.
During an extraordinary cabinet meeting, the council of ministers assigned a committee to investigate the Mishref malfunction and to show who was responsible behind the defect in the station to pursue with legal action.
Minister of Public Works Fadhel Safar, Minister of Health Dr. Helal Al-Sayer, Minister of Electricity and Water Dr. Bader Al-Shuraiaan, Director of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) Dr. Salah Al-Mudhhi, Public Works Undersecretary Abdulaziz Al-Kulaib and Director General of Kuwait Insitute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi, all explained to the cabinet members efforts to address the malfunction in the Mishref station.
Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Roudhan Al-Roudhan, in a statement after the meeting, said the officials reiterated safety of drinking water and the pollution caused by the malfunction did not affect water supply into distillation stations.
He said they have also explained that all measures were taken to contain and reduce pollution in sea water.
The officials said the public were notified of the precautionary measures and the areas in which swimming and fishing were banned, said Al-Roudhan.
The cabinet urged the ministers and officials to double efforts to address the matter and to be fully transparent in informing public about progress made, he added.
The cabinet, meanwhile, assigned a ministerial committee to follow up the developments of the Mishref station matter and to take all necessary means to contain and eliminate impacts of pollution on environment.
The cabinet also assigned another committee, headed by the Fatwa and Legislation Department, with memberships of EPA, Kuwait University, KISR, Kuwait Oil Company and Kuwait Engineers Society to investigate the Mishref Sewage treatment station malfunction and to take legal actions against those responsible.
