Hypertension, diabetes and weather-induced asthma are health problems facing Filipinos once they have been in the UAE for two years, said a physician here.

"In my practice, and based on circumstantial evidence, these health problems are compounded by loneliness and lack of exercise," said Dr Rosario Tigno, director of the Philippine Medical Centre in Karama.

"An unhealthy diet and sedentary life trigger the onset of gout and arthritis. A couch potato who also eats a lot of red meat, nuts and other high-cholesterol food accelerates the process."

Dr Tigno led a 20-person medical team from Filipino Health Care Providers and conducted free medical check-ups yesterday at St Mary's Church in Dubai.

The team, under the auspices of the Philippine consulate in Dubai, included five general practitioners, a dentist, an optometrist, physiotherapists and other medical professionals.

Free tests administered included blood sugar and blood pressure checks as well as eye and dental examinations. Over-the-counter drugs and vitamins were also distributed during the mission.

"When people shun exercise and forget about a balanced diet, obesity is not far away," said Dr Tigno.
