Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Dubai United entered the semi-finals of the Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Ramadan Football Tournament with contrasting wins here on Wednesday night.
While Dewa secured a hard-fought 2-1 win in an ill-tempered match over the Dubai Diamonds, Dubai United eased past Al Khawaneej 5-3 to secure their spots in the last-four stage of the three-week tournament being held at the Dubai Police Officers Club.
Dewa’s French striker Kevin Salvatore scored the opener after 11 minutes and Kenyan Remy Blanc made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time.
In the second half, Dewa allowed the Diamonds to pile on the pressure and they pulled a goal back through their Nigerian professional Florian Tsi.
But another of Diamonds’ Nigerian, Victor Mike, was sent off by referee Mohammad Obaid for objecting to a decision, allowing Dewa to see out the remainder of the match.
Dubai United were clinical against Al Khawaneej as they were 3-1 ahead by half-time. Ben Sadoun Date scored in the first minute and Majid Nasser quickly added a second. Abdul Karim reduced the deficit in the tenth minute, but Hussain Khurshid made it 3-1 with a long-range effort.
Mubarak Hamad and Abdul Karim Jameel made it 5-1 before Al Khawaneej scored consolation goals through Majdi Hussain and Hussain Khurshid.
Meanwhile, tournament patron Shaikh Mohammad Bin Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum ordered that the total prize money for the event be increased from Dh750,000 to Dh1 million.
During a visit to the Dubai Police Officers Club, Shaikh Mohammad said the cash prize for the winning team would be Dh200,000, while the runners-up will get Dh100,000, along with separate prizes for individual performances.
