Over 20 per cent of the streetlights in one area of Hamad Town do not work, a local municipal councillor stated yesterday.

The councilor explained that the broken streetlights, most of which are located in Area 6 of Hamad Town, especially along roads 410, 412, 608 and 832, have not been repaired and there has been an inordinate delay in the carrying out of maintenance work in the area.

Khalid Al Kaabi, who represents Hamad Town on the Northern Municipal Council, told Bahrain Tribune yesterday that the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) is generally prompt and efficient in carrying out maintenance works and repairs, however for some reason these lights remain broken.

"This time around it has been around a month since the complaints have been filed and we have met with no response." He explained that many of the lights are located on the roundabouts were proper lighting is essential to maintain security and safety.

The councillor affirmed that he appreciates the efforts of Minister Fahmi bin Ali Al Jowder who heads the Electricity and Water Authority, and stated that the minister is always willing to listen and to ensure that the needs of society are met. He added that on the orders of the minister and his deputies, a team did visit the affected areas in the night for a first hand experience, however no follow-up action was taken.
