Amman - Under the Patronage of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan President of El Hassan Science City (EHSC) and The Royal Scientific Society (RSS), the transition event of the Clean Technology Innovation Cluster took place today.

The Cluster operation was handed over from the Economic Development Program to the Royal Scientific Society.

The Clean Technology Cluster is a collaborative effort that has been shared between the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and the Economic Development Program funded by USAID Jordan and sector stakeholders. The Cluster aims to lobby and build bridges that will help entrepreneurs in Clean Technology by offering them advice, services and access to capital and markets.

HRH Princess Sumaya in her welcoming speech presented by Dr. Odeh Al Jayousi, Vice President for Science and Research at the RSS, said that the Cluster had been designed to respond to the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II for a future driven by knowledge: "Today, we can truly celebrate our joint efforts to help Jordanian entrepreneurs to find their place in the global value chain. And as Jordanians with great ambitions for our country's future, we must thank USAID for helping to make our dreams a reality." The Clean Technology Cluster will focus on resources on the key areas of renewable energy, environmental technology and water conservation: "These are crucial to our search for sustainable and equitable development," added the Princess.

The Cluster works with a variety of public and private sector stakeholders to help create meaningful contributions from Jordan in specific development sectors: Solar Energy, Alternative Fuels and Research and Development.

"Our shared national needs must drive our development priorities," said the Princess. "Water and Energy are key constraints for economic development, yet these challenges have the potential to drive our innovation agenda." HRH said she hoped this new initiative would lead to the creation of quality jobs in these sectors, as well as increasing regional and global exports and helping to entice foreign direct investment.

"We are proud of our Human Capital and this initiative will help to make sure that more of our talented people achieve their potential on local and international markets," added the Princess.

The Cluster structure aims to promote clean technology R&D through the RSS's own International Research and Development Centre: "This organic ecosystem breathes life into our most vital growth sectors. It supports the innovative process and helps to build prosperity," said the Princess. "The idea of the prosperity value chain is what makes Clusters work for growth." Representing the USAID Jordan, Dr Ruba Jaradat welcomed the Clean Tech Cluster move to the capable hands of the Royal Scientific Society. She said USAID's support of this sector has covered many areas, such as training, business development, investment, policy drawing, R&D, and funding. "It is my pleasure as well to affirm the USAID's continued support for the cluster methodology. I would like to thank you all for your contributions for your successful implementation of this methodology. The USAID has supported key areas such as solar technology, water conservation, brown gas, and will continue to support the Sector's growth, Dr Jaradat said.

It is worth nothing that the Economic Development Program plays a supportive and enhancing role for policy dialogue, whereby it assists in the development of policy making process, and establishing it as a constant mechanism for dialogue. The Innovation Clusters provide a platform that enables participants to exchange information, learn from each other, and adopt standardized practices. The Program's handing over of this cluster to the RSS stems from its belief that the later is best placed to sustain the Cluster's work, and build on this legacy in the fulfillment of the objectives it has been established for.

EHSC is a non-government, not-for-profit organization and encompasses three main constituents namely; the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Jordan's largest and most prestigious applied research institution, the Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), a leading Jordanian university focusing on ICT and Electronics Engineering, and the El Hassan Business Park, Jordan's leading entrepreneurial center and technology incubator. These three entities work together to create an innovation avenue capable of delivering tangible benefits to the people of Jordan and the region using science and technology.
