AMMAN -- The Civil Service Consumer Corporation (CSCC) on Thursday decided to lower the prices of Georgian sheep sold in its outlets during Eid Al Adha from JD125 to JD120 per head.

CSCC Director General Mahmoud Abu Hazim said the decision is in line with His Majesty King Abdullah's directives to alleviate citizens' economic hardships, adding that the new prices will cover sheep that weigh between 36 and 40 kilogrammes.

"The prices of lighter sheep will be reduced accordingly," he told The Jordan Times on Thursday, adding that those who purchased sheep before the decision went into effect will be reimbursed.

"Citizens from southern governorates who bought sheep before the decision will receive JD5 as compensation," the CSCC director general added, noting that specialised committees were formed to monitor and ensure that the sheep are slaughtered according to Sharia (Islamic law) and health standards.

Abu Hazim indicated that the corporation also opened sheep selling centres across the Kingdom, including at the Greater Amman Municipality's slaughterhouse, to enable citizens to buy quality red meat at "reasonable prices".

"Sales at these centres registered significant growth during the last two days," he said, adding that 4,000 heads of sheep were sold during the last 48 hours.

The corporation's 55 branches will be open during the Eid to provide citizens with essential commodities at fair prices, Abu Hazim highlighted, noting that the corporation offers products 5-15 per cent less than the market price.

He underlined that a quality management system was activated in the CSCC to make sure that food items and other products sold at the corporation's branches comply with Jordanian standards.
