Dubai, Oct 20th, 2011 (WAM) -- The School of Engineering at the American University in Dubai (AUD) has become the first academic member of the International Communication Union (ITU), with the full support of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

To acknowledge this new membership and mark the occasion, Houlin Zhao, Deputy Secretary General of the ITU, accompanied by Bilal Jamoussi, ITU Head of the Study Group Division, and Nasser bin Hammad, Senior Manager of International Affairs at the TRA visited the School of Engineering. They were received and welcomed by Peggy Awwad, AUDs External Relations Manager.

Mohammad Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of the TRA said: "It is our pleasure to congratulate AUD on this great achievement. We always support any cooperation of this nature, and regard this event as another opportunity to develop the Information and Communication Technology industry in the region. We are also confident that AUD will rise to the occasion and meet their responsibility.""Undoubtedly, most everyone recognizes the important role of the ITU of setting and developing international communication standards. At the TRA, we are always keen to stay abreast of all the ICT developments and related initiatives, as well as sponsoring many events that contribute in sharing expertise and knowledge. We believe that AUDs ITU membership will provide a platform for knowledge sharing from students, professors, and the ITU," he added.

Commenting on the event, Dr. Wael Bazzi, Assistant Professor at the School of Electric and Computer Engineering, said: "AUDs membership in the ITU is a unique opportunity to partake in various topics related to ICT. It will give AUD professors and students the chance to participate in ITU events and meetings, in addition to discussing relevant issues with ITU decision makers as well as other members from around the world."ITU is a specialized UN agency which dedicated to ICT issues. The Union is responsible for organizing radio and satellite broadcasting, developing international electronics, and setting the standards for ICT exchange to reach cooperation among many countries and agencies, in addition to extending aid to developing communities so that they can benefit from technological services.
