On average 130,000 tons of pomegranate are produced in Saveh city, Markazi province, every year of which a portion is exported to different countries including UK, Germany, Japan, Armenia, UAE and Ukraine.

Director of Saveh Agricultural Jihad Organization Alireza Qoreshi in an Interview with Iran Daily said Saveh pomegranate output will increase this year.

Most of Iran's pomegranate gardens are located in Saveh . In addition to harvesting the pomegranate, people of Saveh produce pomegranate paste and other products.

Saveh city ranks first in the country in terms of the area under pomegranate cultivation and production of pomegranate. Taste and color of saveh pomegranate are unique in the world.

Over 10,100 hectares of Saveh's lands are under cultivation of pomegranate of which 8,000 hectares is fertile. The rest are sapling.

About 5,000 tons of pomegranates were exported to various countries including Britain, Germany, Japan, UAE, Armenia and Ukraine last year. It is estimated that the export trend would continue this year, Qureshi said.

Referring to the production of organic pomegranate, he said that production of the organic crop must be under supervision of the Organic Association. Its production will take at least three years.

He stressed that the organic pomegranate is produced in parts of Saveh's gardens currently. The remaining gardens are converting into organic farms. More than 95 percent of Saveh's pomegranate varieties are sweet and sour.

Qureshi said that there are two processing industries that purchase 150 tons of pomegranates and convert them to pomegranate juice and concentrates.
