Damascus - Minister of Tourism Saadalla Agha al-Qlaa called on people involved in the tourism sector to launch personal and group initiatives to make Damascus a tourism destination.
He also called for giving priority to the National Program for Tourism Quality for 2010, which was recently implemented in order to improve and develop tourist services.
During a meeting held on Monday at the Damascus Department of Tourism, Agha al-Qalaa stressed the need for studying markets, rehabilitating existing tourist products, and establishing integrated tourist products in Damascus and Damascus countryside.
The minister pointed out to the importance of focusing on Damascus, since most tourist activities are focused in it, with working tourist facilities in it making up 30% of tourist facilities in Syria. Facilities under construction in Damascus also make up around 15% of projects in Syria.
The National Program for Tourism Quality aims to rehabilitate all tourism facilities and sites, provide the necessary technical and services qualifications, and apply quality standards in accordance with the ministry's decisions and regulations.
The 10th five-year plan focused on the necessity of developing tourist promotion and marketing and following professional promotional plans and methods that relay the true image of Syria and its history, civilization, heritage and historic sites.
