MUSCAT -- The internationally recognised and widely sought after accounting-finance qualifications, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and ACCA's Certified Accounting Technician (CAT), can now be directly studied and applied for here in the Sultanate, it was announced at a press meet held at the Sheraton Oman Hotel yesterday.

Presentations by Stephen A Shields, Head of Corporate Development, ACCA Middle East who especially came from the UAE for the occasion and ACCA Oman Country Manager, Mohammed Said Khan, clarified how those interested could take advantage of this offer and become amongst the 240,000 students and 105,000 members in 170 countries, who are advancing their careers.

It was noted that the ACCA qualification is considered to be one of only two highest-ranking accountancy qualifications in the world. It is equivalent to a Masters degree and allows its registered holders an opportunity of working, in their chosen area of excellence, anywhere in the world. Being one of the ultimate accounting qualifications, many ACCA holders take up top financial positions in both public and commercial concerns.

Anyone seeking an ACCA qualification has to be a minimum of 18 years of age, with 2 A-levels and 3 GCE's or equivalent in 5 separate subjects, including English and mathematics, or be a mature student above 21 years of age.  This entitles applicants to enroll on ACCA Part 1. Anyone with a B.Sc. (Hons), Applied Accounting (Oxford Brookes University) is eligible to ACCA Part 2. After completion of Part 3 and with a total of three years of experience, gained before, during or after the exams, students become Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

For those with no formal qualifications, above the age of 16, wishing to pursue a career in accounting, they may take up studies leading to ACCA's CAT qualification.

This entails completion of CAT Introductory level, CAT Intermediate level and CAT Advanced level which allows for access directly to ACCA Part 1, and together with 1 year's practical experience gained before, during or after the exams, successful students are awarded the CAT qualification.

Once enrolled, students can opt to study alone, perhaps with a private tutor or with specific coaching being offered at seven places, namely the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), College of Banking and Financial Studies, Majan College, Visions Institute of Professional Studies, Polyglot Institute in Watayah, Muscat and in Al Hail, Seeb and the National Institute of Computer Education.
