DUBAI (Zawya Dow Jones)--Abu Dhabi's municipality said Monday a 5 billion U.A.E. dirham ($1.36 billion) road and tunnel project aimed at easing congestion in the capital is due to open for traffic in August 2011.
The Al Salam Street tunnel project is set for full completion in January 2012 but will become operational as early as August next year while finishing works will continue for about four more months, Ahmed Al Sayari, head of road construction at Abu Dhabi Municipality, told MEED's Road, Bridges and Tunnels Projects conference in Dubai.
The project, part of the emirate's 2030 plan, will provide an uninterrupted traffic corridor in central Abu Dhabi through the construction of interchanges and tunnels, and the widening of existing roads. Al Salam Street is a main traffic route through the capital.
The project's largest contract, worth AED3.1 billion and being carried out by a joint venture of Samsung C&T and Abu Dhabi's Saif Bin Darwish, is due for completion in January 2012, Al Sayari said.
Nurol LLC, a unit of Turkey's Nurol Group is due to complete a second, AED760 million contract on the project by mid-December, while MA Kharafi and Sons is set to finish work on a third, AED833 million contract in November, he said. Abu Dhabi's Hilal Bil Badi & Partners Contracting Co., or Hilalco, completed its portion on the project under an AED67.6 million contract in June, Al Sayari added.
