Part of DoT's 2015 strategy

The Department of Transport (DOT) announced that as part of the 2015 strategy it will launch 1,400 new buses that will serve 165 routes.

"The Department of Transport is expanding bus services as a rapidly-growing segment of the public are using them for their unrivalled benefits such as world-class and quality service, cost-competitiveness, around the clock availability and high standards of safety, security and convenience," DOT said in a statement.

The 1,400 new buses will have 50 seats each, and serve routes linking Abu Dhabi with Dubai, Al Ain, Liwa/Madinat Zayed, Jabal Al Dhana, and Sila as well as routes linking Al Ain City with Madinat Zayed, Al Ruwais, and Sila.

Currently DOT operates 575 buses on 106 routes, of which 52 routes in Abu Dhabi Metropolitan and suburbs, 23 routes in Al Ain, and 31 in the Western Region.

Buses depart every 15 minutes inside the city, every hour between Abu Dhabi Island and suburbs and every one or two hours between Abu Dhabi and Western Region.

DOT said that in the first quarter of 2013, buses commuted 13.4 million people, averaging 150,000 commuters per day.
