ABU DHABI, 18th April, (WAM) -- The Department of Municipal Affairsand Transport, represented in the Municipality of the Dhafra Municipality, signed an investment agreement worth AED222 million todevelop the central market in Madinat Zayed in the Dhafra Region inco-operation and partnership with the private sector, according to theBuild, Operate, Transfer (BOT) model.

The agreement was signed during the municipalitys participation inthe Cityscape Abu Dhabi Exhibition, whose activities were launched atthe Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre today.

Eng. Atiq Khamis Al Mazrouei, Acting Director-General of the AlDhafra Municipality, revealed that the project for developing thecentral market in Madinat Zayed in the Al Dhafra Region was awarded toone of the local development companies with the aim of renovating theexisting building and adding new buildings within the projects land,and in a manner that would ensure the best utilisation of the land.

The Al Dhafra Municipality and the developer will provide analternative to shop owners in the current market within the newdevelopmental proposition, in keeping with the municipalitys aim ofensuring customer satisfaction.

The project, according to the investor's proposal, will include twofloors, with the ground floor housing a hypermarket, retail stores,commercial stores and entertainment facilities.

The first floor will include restaurants, retail stores, kiosks, aswell as a childrens play area, shops, health centres, publichallways, waiting areas, cinema theatre and a multipurpose hall.

The areas outside the project will include shops that could be analternative for tenants in the current market, parking lots, greenareas and walkways. The project is in the centre of Madinat Zayedencompassing 53,307 square metres (sq.m.).

Besides the development of the central market project, the Al Dhafra Municipality will review the plans for establishing, investing,managing and operating a popular market for vegetables, fruit, meatand fish at the Ghayathi City with a developmental value worthAED33.733 million. The project will cover an area of 17,252 sq.m.

Al Mazrouei stated that the two projects would meet all the needs ofthe residents and would help reduce long-distance travel for shoppingand entertainment. They would also contribute to tourism and theshopping diversity in the Al Dhafra Region, while increasing employmentopportunities, income and investment in the area, he added.
