Tehran - United Nations Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran for unsubstantiated allegations by Washington run counter to Charter of the United Nations, Tehran University Professor Abu Mohammad Asgarkhani said on Tuesday. Asgarkhani told a roundtable discussion at IRNA conference hall in presence of Tehran University academic Akbar Valizadeh that the United States unilateral sanctions on Iran are in contravention with the international law and in pursuit of Washington's political goals in the Middle East.
Asgarkhani said that Washington has mobilized its anti-Iran campaign under the pretext of uranium enrichment Iran has launched to guarantee fuel supply for the power plant and Tehran medical research reactor, claiming that Iran has planned to build bomb.
'Unfortunately, the entire western media are currently misleading the public opinion about Iranian nuclear program alleging that Iran has attempted to build bomb, whereas the International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed non-diversion from civilian utility of Iran's nuclear program time and again in its consecutive reports.'
Asgarkhani said that the fault the western observers find with Iran is its refusal to ratify Additional Protocol to Non-Proliferation Treaty which grants intrusive inspection to IAEA something which is non-binding.
Iran had accepted the Additional Protocol to NPT, but, the parliament did not ratify it after the US lobbied the IAEA to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council.
The International Law professor said that under the current circumstances, the resolutions passed by the UN Security Council imposing sanctions on Iran at the behest of the US administration contravened the UN Charter and must be revised.
'The US officials usually impose unilateral sanctions on sovereign states for political objectives. Such approach is copying what the US administrations have done for years in the past. It has become a common culture for them,' he said.
Asgarkhani said that Washington's pursuit of extrajudicial methodology is blatant violation of the Charter of the United Nations to the extent that the US administration has gone far away from the International Law by accusing the Islamic Republic of Iran of violating the NPT and it is taking measures to make Iran accountable for.
He said that Washington is making every effort with the IAEA drafting a report as what it did last November to cast doubt on civilian nature of Iranian nuclear program to rally support from its allies for anti-Iran campaign.
Berating the US extrajudicial approach against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Asgarkhani said that the US administration has embarked on jeopardizing the international peace and security by pursuing unilateral sanctions and what it orchestrated with the Security Council.
He said that the United States has done a series of actions over the past 30 years including freezing Iranian government's assets with the US banks and pressuring the IAEA to issue its latest controversial report last November about Iran proving that it is hostile to Iran.
Asgarkhani said that US administration knows no end to its hostility to Iran and even if Iran had ratified the Additional Protocol to NPT, it will say Iran has not joined the international campaign against terrorism, Iran must end its support for Hezbollah of Lebanon and should no longer support the Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and must form relations with Israel and improve human rights.
Meanwhile, Academic of Tehran University Akbar Valizadeh said that the US administration has exceeded the boundaries of sanctions distinguished by the Charter of the United Nations and is pursuing hostile approach toward Iran.
Valizadeh said that the US has orchestrated sanctions on Iran to secure NPT, whereas, the Islamic Republic of Iran has renounced weapons of mass destruction and is lobbying with the international organizations to make the Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction.
Valizadeh said that the US sanctions have nothing to do with NPT and that the US administration is using Iranian nuclear program as a pretext to violate Iranian national sovereignty in pursuit of its strategy of regime change.
