AMMAN - Construction of a $50 million tourism village near the ancient city of Petra is expected to start before the end of 2009, according to officials.
The village, which will be completed within 30 months of the laying of the foundation stone, will include a 100-bed five-star hotel and a multipurpose conference hall in addition to other facilities, Head of Pharaon Commercial Investment Group Sheikh Ghaith R. Pharaon said on Monday.
The project also entails the establishment of a shopping area including a handicrafts market, restaurants, a spa and swimming pools, Pharaon said at a press conference yesterday.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Maha Khatib, who signed an agreement with Pharaon for the implementation of the project, said the government has taken guarantees to preserve the archaeological site and the surrounding environment of Petra, which is one of the world's new seven wonders. The project, she said, will help create jobs for residents of the area and attract more tourists.
Officials at the briefing said all facilities under the project will be one-storey high, noting that environmental impact studies were conducted and indicated that the project will not harm the surrounding environment.
Pharaon, who said specialised companies are working on designs for the project, said the blueprints will be submitted to the ministry and other concerned authorities for approval.
At the press conference yesterday, the minister said 15 per cent of the hotel's revenues will be allocated for local community development.
She added that a centre will be built under the project to offer training to local residents in hospitality skills.
