A strategic document was ratified with a credit outlay of 2.1 trillion rials for achieving rice self-sufficiency, said the head of the working group for compiling the document.
Gholamreza Khankeshipour, who is also a faculty member of Rice Research Institute, said all aspects have been reviewed for achieving self-sufficiency within three years.
The official stressed that this will help Iran make up for rice shortage, which is around 700,000 tons.
Khankeshipour noted that programs such as training courses, research for sustainable production and introduction of high-yield varieties have been considered in the document.
"Plans have been made for improving farming management and producing certified seeds," he said.
According to the official, mechanization of cultivation and harvest operations as well as integration of agricultural lands are other issues anticipated in the strategic document.
"In addition, plans are underway for improving the quality of products and packages, building a brand, correcting consumption pattern and launching a rice bourse," he said.
