A 'flat' or 'dead' battery is one of the most common problems faced by many of us at some point or another while driving a car. A 'flat' battery means a 'discharged' battery which can't start the engine due to improper or irregular charging in the vehicle. But it can be revived by proper charging, outside the car, with the help of an auto electrician.

On the other hand, a 'dead' battery situation could arise when the battery is nearing its end of service life or because it has been poorly maintained. The main question is what to do next. If you are stuck in the middle of your journey look for another vehicle to jump start your car, so that you can drive down to the nearest auto electrician for recharging or to buy a new battery.

In case you need to jumpstart your vehicle, here's how to do it -

  • You will need a 'jump start booster cables' and another car with a good battery.
  • Check whether both batteries are without any physical damages and vent plugs are closed.
  • Make sure that the vehicles are not touching each other and the ignition keys are in 'off' position.
  • Connect one end of the + ve booster cable to positive terminal of flat battery and other end to positive terminal of assisting battery in the other vehicle.
  • Connect one end of  -ve booster cable to negative terminal of assisting battery.
  • Make final connection of other end of -ve cable to engine block of 'flat' battery car.
  • Start the vehicle that had a 'flat' battery.
  • Now remove the cables in reverse order of connection and make sure that the terminals are not touching any metallic portion or touching each other.

There are many variables that will determine how long a car battery will last. Some of the things that will send it to an early grave are - higher kilometers run/day, sparingly used spare car, and no maintenance. Many starting cycles, coupled with short or slow run times, frequently travelling in hilly areas will also leave your battery below the ideal charged specification for most of its shortened life.

In dealing with most 'flat' or 'dead' car battery situations, it helps to understand how long a car battery usually lasts. Since batteries are exposed to extreme temperatures in the Gulf, on an average, a car battery will last for about 2 to 3 years. This is because, in a battery, power is delivered by a chemical reaction. Higher temperatures accelerate the unwanted chemical reactions which slowly kill the battery. This is why you will find that many batteries are encased in an insulated jacket inside the engine compartment. This insulation allows it to go through its normal temperature changes slowly and can extend overall battery life.
