Muscat: New desalination plant in Ghubra, which has begun its trail operations on Thursday, will ease water shortage problems, the top official from Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), said.
"The new Ghubra desalination plant will contribute to raising the water level at the main distribution reservoirs as well as improve the water pressure and provide water to Muscat Governorate," Mohammad Al Mahruqi, PAEW chairman said.
"The startup of the plant will gradually reduce the current shortage of water supply," the chairman added.
The plant will produce around 50,000 cubic meters of water during its trial run while gradually increasing its production until it reaches its maximum capacity of 42 million gallons per day.
Al Mahruqi assured that the commercial operation of the Ghubra plant including the new Barka desalination plant expansion will begin its operation phase at the beginning of next year.
They will produce 12.5 million gallons of water daily which will greatly contribute to increasing water production for Muscat, South Al Batinah and Dakhiliya Wilayats.
