Amman - Construction of the new Salt Government Hospital will start soon as the tender has been awarded to a local contracting company at a total cost of JD40 million, Public Works and Housing Minister Mohammad Obeidat announced on Saturday.

The minister told reporters the project, to be launched on a 54,000-square metre plot of land, involves construction of a 350-bed medical facility, extendable to 450 beds.

The main 11-storey building includes seven lower floors that house laboratories, an outpatient clinic as well as radiology, kidney dialysis, physiotherapy and forensics units, operations theatres, the main pharmacy, an education and training section in addition to maintenance facilities, said Obeidat.

He said the construction phase will be complete by late 2013 when the Ministry of health will be handed the building that will serve the city of Salt and the governorate of Balqa.

The Salt Hospital, he said, is one of the government's top health priority ventures in addition to education projects that affect the life, safety and welfare of citizens according to the Royal Letter of Designation to the government.
