Oman's Information Technology Authority (ITA) represented the sultanate at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2011 that concluded in Geneva on Tuesday.

WSIS 2011 is the largest annual gathering of the world's 'ICT for development' community, including UN agencies, governments and civil society and ICT industry representatives, said a press release.

ITA conducted a country workshop with a presentation on ITA activities which was moderated by Talal al Rahbi, deputy CEO of operations at ITA. Following the presentation, the ITA facilitated two thematic workshops. The first one was presented by the Ministry of Health  and the second by the Ministry of Civil Services.

In addition to Rahbi, the Omani delegation attending this year's WSIS event included H E Yahya Salim al Wahaibi, Oman's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations and World Trade Organisation, Sharifa al Meskary, director of international relations and information at ITA and other officials.

In his opening speech at the country workshop on Oman, H E Wahaibi said, "With the goal of diversification of the economy and the transformation of the sultanate into a knowledge-based society and the establishment of the TRA and ITA, the ICT sectors have witnessed rapid progress in recent years."
