Dubai: Abu Dhabi’s Burj Mohammad Bin Rashid was placed sixth while Zaha Hadid designed Wangjing SOHO in Beijing bagged the top spot in the latest edition of the Emporis Skyscraper Award.

The Top 10 names were chosen by a panel of experts from among more than 300 skyscrapers of at least 100 metres and which were completed during the previous calendar year. It is the first time a structure in China has been named at the top in Emporis series, currently in its 15th year.

Wangjing SOHO — featuring three skyscrapers of 118 metres, 127 metres and 200 metres won for its ‘excellent energy efficiency and distinctive design, which gives the complex a harmonious and organic momentum’.

The One World Trade Centre in New York (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is the architect) came in fourth, while Burj Mohammad Bin Rashid — Abu Dhabi’s tallest tower and designed by Forster + Partners, was noted for the ‘reflective, ventilated three-skin façade and the solar collectors on the top of the building’ which generate a high level of energy efficiency and sustainability.

In picking the winners, the overall height did not figure as the decisive factor in naming the winners — “The results of recent years clearly show that criteria such as sustainability, efficiency and a clever design play a much more important role than reaching new superlatives”, says Daniel Schuldt, Emporis’ managing director.
