Muscat: Two major projects -- an airport and a water treatment plant -- has been opened by Occidental Oman (Oxy Oman), as part of a major initiative to develop the overall infrastructure in one of the major oil blocks in central Oman.

The airport was established by Oxy Oman and it is approved by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation.

According to Oxy Oman, airport serves for transporting passengers and goods between Mukhaizna filed and Muscat. The airport terminal is designed to serve passengers and air freight with an annual capacity of 130,000 passengers. It is part of a larger plan to develop infrastructure development in the field, which is also an advantage for the region. The inaugural function coincided with the 45th National Day celebration and the tenth anniversary of Occidental Mukhaizna.

The airstrip was designed in accordance with the highest international standards as well as the regulations of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation for receiving Boeing aircraft (800-737B) that are 2,500 metres long and 45 metres wide.

The airstrip lighting was provided to meet the highest standards and international aviation laws, with an eight-metre high control tower equipped with state-of-the-art communication devices.

New airport features a weather station that is connected to Directorate General of Meteorology in order to serve the airport as well as the region. It is also equipped with the latest security technologies to meet the requirements of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation and the Royal Oman Police.

The water treatment plant, which was also opened on Thursday, was established with a total investment of OMR30 million. This plant is for processing oil associated water in four stages. First, oil effluents are screened and separated from water, which is then demineralised. In the third stage, suspended solids are removed, and in the final stage, water gets purified from dissolved solids. The plant has a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day, and the water will be used in steam production, which is critical in the enhanced oil recovery in Mukhaizna.

The celebration was held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Dr Fahad bin Al Julanda bin Majed Al Said and was attended by Sandy Lowe, a top-level official of Oxy Oil and Gas International.

Mukhaizna field is located in Block 53, with multiple areas for heavy oil production. The field was first discovered in 1975 and started production in 1992.

Oxy became the operator in Mukhaizna field in 2005 and used state-of-the-art technology to make this field the highlight of the oil industry in Oman. This field is one of the largest heavy oil steam injection projects in the world.

Oxy commissioned the steam injection project in 2007 and expanded the application, leading to a remarkable increase in production by 15 fold compared to its previous capacity in 2005.

According to the Oxy Oman, the number of Omani employees in Oxy Oman increased more than 9 times; from 246 in 2005 to 2,344 in 2015, achieving an Omanisation rate of 87 per cent.
