HE Ahmed bin Nasser Al Mahrizi, Minister of Tourism, signed the Ministry digital transformation project agreement with Al Madina Development and Supply LLC, in coordination with the Information Technology Authority (ITA). Dr. Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, signed the agreement on behalf of the ITA and Sheila Hopper Jamal, CEO of Al Madina Development and Supply.

Digital transformation project of Tourism aims to simplify tourism procedures for all tourism establishments through business process re-engineering and achieve end-to-end automation through automation of workflows and processes. It will also effect having a clear visibility regarding all tourism related activities through an executive dashboard to support senior management decision making, as well as marketing and promoting Oman tourism sector.

Dr. Salim Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, talked about the agreement, "We congratulate the Ministry of Tourism for signing the agreement to implement their digital transformation program that will begin by re-engineering the ministry's procedures. The project infrastructure is dependent on many services including G-Cloud, integration platform and digital certification and authentication. According to the agreement, the services will be launched on several phases and we hope that these services will contribute to encouraging investment in the tourism field in the Sultanate. "

Implementation Phases

The project main development services include over 100 eServices in the areas of investors’ services, tourism development, and planning and information and tourism promotion. Several systems will be developed to enhance the ministry services and work processes including, licensing systems, hotel information system, land system, classification system and GIS system.

The project implementation will be done over three phases, in which the first phase will include business process re-engineering, tourism license system, and classification system, while the second phase will include the portal upgrade, mobile app, tourism land system and hotel and tourist information system. The third phase will include the development of the GIS system.

On the agreement and its implementation, Khalifa Abdullah Al Adhali, Director of IT Department at the Ministry of Tourism said, "The agreement comes within the efforts of the ministry in developing our services provided to citizens and investors, in line with other projects sponsored by the ministry, including Omani Tourism strategy. The agreement consists of 3 main parts, which are re-engineering ministry’s procedures, the development and use of integrated tourism system and the restructuring of the Ministry’s electronic portal as well as "Discover Oman” portal.

Project Impacts

The ministry services will have a great impact on the services targeted to the citizens in terms of accessing the services 24/7, tracking the service request, and increasing security, privacy and transparency. The project will also boost the investment in the tourism sector in Oman as it offers several eServices for investors and businesses. Concerning the integration of the project with the other government entities, it will integrate its systems with more than 16 government entities, such as ROP, MOCI, PACDA and others.

The project is expected to contribute to reducing the administrative burden by reducing or stopping documents submission to any governmental entity in the Sultanate, as well as deleting and reducing unnecessary administrative processes and employing digital certification to verify personal data. The duration of the service delivery and the printed papers will be reduced, as applications will be through several online channels, which allows reviewing and following the status of the request and automatic verification of the applicant's data.

Cloud and Integration Services

The portal of the Ministry of Tourism will be hosted in the government cloud (G-Cloud) which is a shared IT infrastructure established by the Information Technology Authority (ITA) to serve IT requirements of ITA and other government entities. The cloud provides data hosting services, networks and core computing resources, and cloud platform services that allow government entities to deploy their applications. The portal will also use the integration platform services of the ITA in order to integrate its systems with the other concerned entities.
