Dubai, UAE: Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) Dubai Cord Blood and Research Centre (DCRC) honoured, those who contributed to the success of the “Treasure of Life” Campaign” 2019 on Tuesday.

In 2019, the campaign,  which focuses on raising awareness amongst the community and expectant mothers on the importance of donating cord blood stem cells succeeded in benefiting 600 participants from 12 different governmental entities in 2019.

Commenting on the success of the campaign Dr Ahmed Bin Kalban, the CEO of Specialised Healthcare Services Sector at the DHA thanked the specialised medical teams and sponsors who exerted all their efforts to guarantee the success of the campaign.

He stressed the importance of the campaign as cord blood preservation can treat life-threatening diseases.

In fact, cord blood stem cells can cure more than 80 blood diseases including leukaemia, thalassemia, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders and sickle cell diseases.

Dr Fatma Alhashimi, Senior Clinical Scientist and Head of Donor Recruitment unit at DCRC revealed during the event that the campaign is going increase its target number of beneficiaries in 2020.

“In 2020, we are targeting to benefit around 2,000 people by increasing the number of visits to different entities from once a month to three times a month to three different locations. We are also planning to target private hospitals as well as universities to broaden the impact of the campaign and benefit as many people as possible. We decided to extend the campaign to 2020 after receiving a 95% satisfaction rate by participants of the campaign. The participants said that they greatly benefited from the information provided from the campaign,” she added.

Since its inception in 2006, DCRC, has successfully stored around 8,000 cord stem cells and has recorded a notable increase in awareness, hence donations, due to the intensive campaigns and programmes launched by the centre.

The “Treasure of Life” aims to educate the Dubai community about the importance of encouraging expectant mothers with a family history of cancer, autoimmune diseases and blood disorders, to name a few, to preserve the stem cells of their babies. This is because the chances their children may develop any of these diseases is higher and so they might need an exact match of units of stem cells.

During the campaign, the process of collecting cord blood stem cells is demonstrated on a dummy to show attendees to understand and overcome any fears they have regarding the procedure.

The event concluded with the honouring the campaign’s strategic partner Mustela, as well as medical staff and employees who contribute to the success of the campaign.

In addition to cord blood stem cell banking, the Centre also conducts molecular tissue compatibility matching tests as well as several other molecular markers for certain diseases.

Those interested to contact the Centre can call on 04-2194010/11.
