The residents of the UAE can now enjoy 50 per cent discount on consumer goods and food from March 20 to April 20.

The initiative has been launched by the Ministry of Economy as a part of the World Happiness Day in cooperation with co-operative outlets and other hypermarket and supermarket chains in the country.

According to Al Bayan, the initiative increased the discount period to 51 days, as it began on March 1 as a part of the 13th Gulf Consumer Protection Day. The discounts include the reduction of prices of 7,500 items - 3,000 of which are present in co-operatives, and 2,000 in Carrefour and Lulu stores.

Jaleel Holdings, popular distributor to large retailers in the UAE, welcomed the government decision to offer discounts to theconsumers. "Keeping in mind the holy month of Ramadan period ahead, this initiative from the UAE government will be a great relief for the lower consumer segment in particular, apart from consumers in general," said Sameer K. Mohamed, managing director of Jaleel Holdings.

He said the shopping spree is on the rise and consumption is bound to increase given that a lot of families and friends visit each other.

"The households normally stock the food items and this initiative will come handy to plan for the period ahead."

Dr Dhananjay Datar, chairman and managing director Al Adil Trading, said this is a wonderful initiative and comes at the right time for the consumers.

"Our experience shows that this will lead to increased customer footfall as well as enhanced product movement from the retail shelves. It was give a great impetus to the market and once again reinforces the message that Dubai has always taken utmost care in the interest of consumers," he said.
