Saudi Arabia's courts have handled 507 cases involving project delays by contracting companies over the past six weeks, according to official data.

About 60 percent of the firms taken to court are small contractors while nearly half the total law suits are in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah, showed a Justice Ministry report, published in the Arabic language daily Aliqtisadia.

"The law suits against contracting companies during that period involved mainly delays in projects and other construction violations," the report said.

It showed 251 cases were handled by courts in Jeddah while 79 cases were heard by courts in the Eastern port of Dammam, 46 in the Western Medina city, 17 in the capital Riyadh and the rest in other cities in the Gulf Kingdom.
