Manama, AGU: The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) recently held a meeting with senior higher education officials in Malaysia. In the virtual meeting, both sides discussed several topics of mutual interest and enhancing cooperation between GCC states and Malaysia in the field of higher education development.

The meeting was attended by AGU President Dr Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al Ohaly and Undersecretary of the Higher Education Ministry in Malaysia Dr Mohammed Cairul Iqbal, as well as 11 deans of the most reputed government medical colleges in Malaysia, and a number of deans and professors at AGU.

Dr Al Ohaly welcomed the attendees and highlighted the strong relations bonding GCC states and Malaysia, at the same time he reviewed the opportunities to strengthen and enhance cooperation between the two sides in the scientific and academic fields.

Dr Al Ohaly also emphasised that AGU is keen on developing cooperation with Malaysian universities in various areas, especially with the great opportunities to enhance cooperation in various academic fields in medicine and graduate studies programmes.

"Opening to more international partnerships with the most distinguished universities and international organisations is an added value to the achievements of the university, which constantly strives to address the development issues of the GCC countries through its rare and innovative programmes in the field of education and scientific research related to development issues in the Council countries," Dr Al Ohaly stated.

Furthermore, Dr Al Ohaly recommended the establishment of a strategic partnership with the Malaysian side by founding a special fund to finance joint scientific research with a capital of USD60,000 (USD30,000 share, which is subject to increase, from each side).

He also suggested hosting three deans of medical colleges in Malaysian at AGU, with the aim of exchanging expertise in the field of medical education and introducing an integrated academic programme to prepare future physicians until the year 2050.

For his part, Dr Iqbal expressed his delight to develop the cooperation with AGU, stressing the importance of the expansion of cooperation relations in the academic and scientific fields.

The attendees also discussed areas in which cooperation can be achieved through the exchange of students and scholarships, practical training opportunities and the exchange of academic expertise between AGU and similar Malaysian universities that are distinguished in the field of medical research, and the implementation of joint educational projects.

Additionally, the meeting discussed the participation of prestigious Malaysian universities in the field of medical education in the "Careers Day", which is annually organised  by the College of Medicine and Medical Science (CMMS) at AGU, with the purpose of exchanging of cultures and expertise in the professional field.

Among the attendees were the Dean of the CMMS Dr Abdelhalim Deifalla, Director of the Medical Education Unit at the CMMS and Government Hospitals CEO Dr Ahmed Al Ansari, Deputy Dean of the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) Dr Afif Ben-Salah, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs Dr Yasin Tayem and Deputy Dean of Clinical Affairs Dr Mona Arekat, while the meeting was moderated by Professor at Princess Al Jawhara Al Ibrahim Centre for Molecular Medicine, Genetics and Inherited Disorders (ACMID) in AGU Dr Khaled Gerish.
