Abu Dhabi: startAD, the Abu Dhabi-based global accelerator anchored at NYU Abu Dhabi and powered by Tamkeen, will host the fifth edition of its Angel Rising Investor Education Symposium on March 23.

Organized under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Economy, and in partnership with VentureSouq, the Symposium’s theme this year is Looking East: The New Digital Silk Road & The Future of the Global Technology Order.

Taking place at NYU Abu Dhabi, Angel Rising will highlight the UAE’s role in shaping the future of the global economy with the emergence of new technologies and markets in China, India, and Africa. Open to the public, the Symposium is free to attend; prior registration is required and available here.

The Symposium will welcome a number of renowned investors and experts; these include Assistant Undersecretary and Head of UAE Executive Team for the Global Innovation Index His Excellency Abdallah Al Shamsi; Chief Executive Officer of China SilkRoad Investment & Development Winston Ma Wenyan; President and Chief Executive Officer of Ken Miller Capital in New York Ken Miller; Managing Partner at Structure Capital in Silicon Valley Jillian Manus; Chief Product Officer of Goibibo (MakeMyTrip Group) Anshuman Bapna; Managing Director at Kalaari Capital Vani Kola; Founding Partner at CRE Venture Capital Pule Taukobong; and Founder and Chief Executive Officer of BrainGain Global Harjiv Singh, among others.

UAE Minister of Economy His Excellency Sultan AlMansoori said: “The United Arab Emirates has been one of the leading countries in asserting the importance of building strategic partnerships for new markets that depend on advanced technology to support startups in the promising markets of China, India and Africa. I also appreciate the efforts of all strategic partners at Angel Rising, whose timing is highly appropriate as several major projects and initiatives will be launched to achieve the greater cooperation between startup companies and leading entrepreneurs around the world.”

NYU Abu Dhabi Vice Provost for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Associate Dean of Engineering, and startAD Managing Director Ramesh Jagannathan said: “The stage seems set for what is perhaps the greatest entrepreneurial challenge yet, cultivating a class of innovative and visionary startups for the three billion middle class consumers from China, India, and Africa. These consumers need new businesses to solve their unique challenges. The advent of the 21st century digital silk road has the UAE poised to play a key role in shaping the future of the global economy by paving strategic corridors for technology transfers and capital deployment. Angel investors will help unlock the potential of these startups, and enable the UAE to contribute to shaping the future of the global technology order.”

Partner at VentureSouq Sonia Weymuller commented: “Some of our portfolio companies have done very well by positioning themselves eastwards instead of westwards. China is soaring as the new venture capital kingmaker in emerging markets; India is rising as its own viable force with a well-developed talent pool and a formidable consumer market. The pace of change is increasing, and early stage companies are proving to be the most agile in adapting to these trends. As such, it’s important that investors, both individual and institutional, fully understand the emergence of a new global dynamic and its implications on their investment theses moving forward: what are the challenges and the opportunities that exist today for investors in the GCC as the world looks to the next East Pole.”

The annual Symposium intends to elevate a new class of Angel Investors by providing education on key topics related to Angel Investing, demystify the startup investing landscape, facilitate conversation among community and industry leaders, and ultimately enable and inspire more investors to fuel greater innovation in the UAE and beyond.

Angel Rising 2019 is supported by Etihad, Latham & Watkins, Khalifa Fund, Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), and UAE Exchange.
