MPs want the government to re-evaluate its financial and economic status following the devastating effects of Covid-19.
They also want plans to restructure fiscal balancing while protecting citizens’ benefits and the country’s growth.
The calls are contained in a proposal unanimously approved yesterday during Parliament’s weekly session.
The Finance and National Economy Ministry has explained in writing that the government was already working on a number of plans to stabilise the economy since the outbreak of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, MPs also approved another proposal that seeks to start technical inspections on new vehicles from the seventh year of the date of manufacture for the elderly instead of the current fifth, while making tests mandatory every two years instead of every year for older vehicles.
Other proposals on which Parliament voted in favour of are building a central market in Hamad Town, easing government services and building a multi-purpose hall for East Riffa residents. All will be now reviewed by the Cabinet.
A proposal to allocate a government plot of land for a youth centre in East Riffa has been withdrawn for two weeks.
Parliament also voted unanimously to amend the 1977 Buildings Law that would see people fined three times more than normal for violations that don’t cause harm.
The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said it was working on a new law that would see any violation that doesn’t involve trespass or endangering lives being dealt with differently.
MPs also voted unanimously to amend the 2002 Parliament Bylaws Law to allow them to question Cabinet officials about matters that have happened before their four-year term should an issue not be resolved.
