The Dubai Civil Defence has just announced some major changes to the fire code.

Salma Omer presented a paper on this topic on the sidelines of the 21st Intersec Exhibition held at Dubai World Trade Centre on Monday.

The changes were made in light of investors suggestions to keep abreast of rapid urbanisation in Dubai.

Colonel Ali Hasan Almutawa emphasised that the paper embodies the civil defence forces' practical experience in combattingfire.

The following are some of the major updates:

1. Fire stations have been increased to accommodate the needs of the entire emirate

2. Water tanks capacities have been reduced from 60 to 30 minutes for certain buildings

3. Buildings with fire hydrants water pump capacity reduced to 1,000gallons per hour

4. No more clean agent fire extinguishing systems in electric and telephone room rooms on multiple-storey buildings

5. Road access for fire fighting equipment has been reduced to 4.5m in waterfront buildings

6. No more sprinklers which require the installation of a false ceiling

7. Balconies must have sprinklers installed
